GRIP AND BALL PRESSURE DRILL

Grip Pressure:

Pressure applied on the club: A problem with many golfers stems from tension in the hands, arms and shoulders generally caused by holding the club too tight. The results will probably be inconsistent direction and slicing of the ball.

Which fingers should apply the most pressure on the club? Even though the overall grip pressure is fairly light, most of the pressure comes from the last three fingers of both hands, as shown in the image above.

Thumbs and index fingers:

When applying pressure to a club with only the thumbs and the index fingers, you are using the outside muscles of your forearms, as indicated with the red lines in the image above.

These are muscles that will create tension in your shoulders and are not needed to create a fluid swing.

Last 3 fingers:

The primarily muscles used when gripping the club are the ones located on the inside of your forearms, as indicated by the yellow lines in the image above.

These muscles are not attached directly to your shoulders, therefore, less tension will be created making this obviously the best choice in gripping the club and also creating a better golf swing.

Ball pressure drill:

When watching television or sitting around, practice holding one golf ball in each hand. Apply pressure with the last 3 fingers of each hand and you will get the feel of gripping the club properly.

Try the ball drill, as shown in the image above, and find out for yourself which fingers apply the pressure.

A favorite expression used: ”You must be relaxed to play golf. Don’t play golf to relax.” Tension in your shoulders will create stress. A good grip will help reduce this stress and will make for a smoother swing.

BALL POSITION

There are no written laws that golf must be played with a particular technique. The player must learn to adopt what is best for him/her. Knowing that there is more than one way to swing a club, allows the player to develop a swing that is best suited for him/her. Where to position the ball falls into this category. Ball placement is a preference and we can only give you suggestions on where to place it. Hitting balls with different ball positions in your stance will give you an idea on which position works best for you, as shown in the image above.

Your preferences:

Full shots mean you are swinging the club to full capacity.

When teaching golf to my students, I always suggest to place the ball at the following areas:

1. Play the ball in front of your heel with your driver, woods or long irons #1, 2, 3, 4 when using a tee.
2. Play the ball slightly back of your left heel with your middle irons #5, 6, 7, 8.
3. Play the ball middle of stance with your short irons #9, PW (pitching wedge), SW (sand wedge).

Ball position improves your posture and gives you a better golf swing.

Placing the ball at different areas in your stance will change the trajectory and also the direction of your shots, as shown in the image above.

Positioning the ball on the tee:

The #1 wood or the driver:

The driver is the longest club in your bag with the least amount of loft on the club face and is designed to give you the greatest distance when hit properly. It is generally used when teeing off to start a hole where distance is the most important factor. The ball is usually teed up when hitting the driver in order to give it the proper trajectory. The start of a hole is the only time that a tee can be used with any club of your choice, as shown in the image above.

The tees:

The tees can range in length from approximately 1 3/8 inches to approximately 3 1/4 inches, as shown in the image above.

How high should I tee up the ball?

Although there are personal preferences as to how high to tee the ball, a rule of thumb is to place the ball on the tee so that half the ball is above the top of the club head when the club is grounded, as shown in the image above.

Positioning the ball on the tee:

Teeing the ball higher will generally give you a higher trajectory which would be preferable with the wind at your back. Teeing it lower would be preferred when hitting into the wind, as shown in the image above.
