STRATEGIES

Let’s look at 2 different types of golf strategies that can be used during the course of your game. It also should be part of how you organize your game plan when competing or simply playing a friendly match. Notes should also be documented, in your little black book, as shown and linked in the image above.

These strategies are as follows:

  1. The risk or the safe method; and
  2. The queen method.

I strongly recommend working with these two strategies.
These strategies are methods that will teach you, limits and choices, on what you can do, on a golf course.

Not everyone can hit a ball 300 yards. Using your head and calculating your advantages on proceeding one way, rather than the other way, can greatly improve your game. It is not necessarily the player who hits the ball 300 yards but the player who thinks, calculates and plays within his/her limits, that will prevail.

1. The risk or the safe method:

The definition of the “risk or the safe method“, is a strategy that takes into account the chances (percentages) of making every shot.

The questions are: should you or should you not?

  • Should you go for the flagstick or the middle of the green?
  • Should you go for the putting green in two shots, when you are in a position to do so, on a par 5 hole?
  • Should you take your driver at the start of a hole to gain as much distance as possible?
  • Should you go over the trees or follow the contour of the fairway?

Let’s look at a par 5 hole, a par 4 hole and a par 3 hole and see how it can be played.

Would you go for option A or option B?

By taking option A, you will use your driver and will take a chance over the bunkers. For your second shot, you will have a shorter shot coming onto the putting green. This will give you the possibility of reaching the putting green in two shots.

By taking option B, you are playing it safe from the start, with your #3 wood. You know the bunker will not be in play if you use your #3 wood because the bunker is too far for that club.

My choice is option B:

I would use a #3 wood at the start. If I use a driver, there is a possibility I may end up in either bunker. My second shot is a #8 iron leaving me with a 100 yards shot onto the putting green. Hitting over the bunkers with the driver is a possibility but a risk. Hitting over the trees on the second shot is also a risk.

Clubs to use: #3 wood, #8 iron, sand wedge and the putter. (Do not forget to check the wind.)

Would you go for option A or option B?

By taking option A, you are playing it safe from the start, with your #3 wood. You know the bunker on the left will not be in play if you use your #3 wood because the bunker is too far for that club.

By taking option B, you will use your driver and will take a chance over the trees. For your second shot, you will have a shorter shot coming onto the putting green.

My choice is option A:

I would use a #3 wood from the start. If I use a driver, there is a possibility I may end up in the left bunker. Hitting over the trees with the driver is a possibility but a risk.

Clubs to use: #3 wood, #8 iron and the putter. (Do not forget to check the wind.)

Would you go for option A or option B?

By taking option A, you are taking a chance over the water, bunker and near the edge of the putting green. You may have a shorter putt for a possible score of 2 (birdy).

By taking option B, you are playing it safe by using the middle of the putting green as your target. Your second shot will have a longer putt. You may still have a possible score of two (birdy).

My choice is option B:

I would aim for the middle of the putting green. I may still have a possible score of two (birdy).

Aiming for the flag near the edge of the putting green is a risk. If I hit the edge, the ball may end up in the water.

Clubs to use: # 8 iron and the putter. (Do not forget to check the wind.)

2. The queen method:

Golf and chess:

Now that you are aware of how distance is important in golf, let see if we can use this information to your advantage with the queen method

Every hole should be planned out as to how you will play it using your little black book. It is simply the matter of starting with the correct club. This club will position you in a favorable area for your second shot, and so on.

Comparing the golf game to the game of chess, you want to place yourself in a good position to beat your opponent. In golf, the golf course is your opponent, no one else, not even the players you are playing with. The player who has the lowest score at the end of the game, wins the game.

How will you play your next shot? Which club will you use? Will you be tempted to take your driver, like most players, at the start of a par 4 hole or will you play strategically, use the risk or the safe method?

Your favorite club:

I am not a chess player but I do know that the queen is the most powerful piece in the game of chess. It can move at any direction. If you loose your queen in the game, you are at a disadvantage.

Which club in your golf bag represents the queen? Which club do you feel most comfortable with? Which club can you hit successfully, 9 times out of 10? Identify this club and plan your game, using this club as often as possible, during your game.

My club of preference is my #8 iron. I can hit a ball 145 yards onto a putting green, 9.5 times out of 10.

It is your job to find out which club is your queen? Everyone has a club they seem to hit better than others. Find it, use it and let me show you how to hit your favorite club, as often as you can during your game, as shown in the image below.

Example:

I will often calculate backwards to figure out which club I will use at the start of the hole. Refer to the example below.

Hole #8 is 350 yards in length.

350 (length of course) – 145 (to the target) = 205 yards (First shot).

I will use the #4 iron in order to reach the distance of 205 yards. My second shot, will be with my favorite club (#8 iron) in order to reach my 145 yard target, as shown in the image above.
