CHIPPING GAME
This chipping game can teach you to perform under pressure when playing against your friends or adversaries.
HOW TO PLAY THE PAR 9 CHIPPING GAME
Pick 9 spots around the putting green, at different distances and angles, identified by flags, as shown in the image below.
Play 1 ball from each hole as a par 3, essentially creating a 9 hole golf course around the practice putting green.
Completing your score cards on a regular basis will provide you with great feedback on the progress you’re making with your chipping, as shown in the image above. This is a lot quicker than a full round of golf.
DIFFERENT CLUB DRILL
When using the different club drill, practice your shots at 12 feet, 16 feet, 20 feet, etc. Get to know which club to use at different distances from the hole, using the 7 o’clock to 5 o’clock swing, as shown in the images above and below.
DISTANCE CHIP DRILL
When practicing the distance chip drill, place a few clubs on the putting green at specific distances. Place yourself on the side of the putting green and try to chip the ball between the clubs using the appropriate club when doing your chipping, as shown in the image below.
HAT/BALL DRILL
When practicing the hat/ball drill, eliminate the hands and wrists actions in order to create a more reliable chipping motion.
Hold a hat or a medium size ball between your forearms during the swing. You should feel your hands, arms and shoulders working as one unit. Keep your wrists still during the impact and the follow through, as shown in the images above and below.
OBSTACLE DRILL
When practicing the obstacle drill, place a golf bag or any kind of obstacle in front of you. You will need to focus on how to get the ball over the obstacle.
This is a great drill to see if you will strike the ball correctly. The club face must hit the ball first, with a descending blow, in a vertical trajectory for the ball to make it over the obstacle, as shown in the image below.
PASSIVE HAND DRILL
The passive hand drill is a great drill to help out with your short game. We have learned the following:
- putting;
- chip shot; and
- pitch and run shot.
These shots are all better performed when keeping the wrists still. Passive wrists actions are preferred in order to achieve better results, as shown in the image above.
Chipping drill:
Hold two clubs together, as shown in the image above. Make your stroke from 7 o’clock to 5 o’clock without breaking (bending) your wrists. If you are breaking your wrists, the extra club will hit you on your side. Do not worry about holding the club correctly. The main idea is to be passive (still) with your wrists (keeping arms, wrists and clubs straight). This drill has helped many golfers improve their chipping.
TARGET CHIPPING DRILL
When practicing the target chipping drill, place a few hula hoops accordingly, on the putting green. Position yourself at different distances and test your skills using the appropriate club and swing, as shown in the image above.
