RISK OR SAFE METHOD

The definition of the”risk or the safe method“, is a strategy that takes into account the chances (percentages) of making every shot. The
questions are: should you or should you not?

Should you go for the flag stick or the middle of the green? Should you go for the putting green in two shots, when you are in a position to do so, on a par 5 hole?

Should you take your driver at the start of a hole to gain as much distance as possible? Should you go over the trees or follow the contour of the fairway?

The risk or the safe method:

Let’s look at a par 5 hole, a par 4 hole and a par 3 hole and see how it can be played.

Hole #1: Par 5 at 485 yards

Would you go for option A or option B?

By taking option A, you will use your driver and will take a chance over the bunkers. For your second shot, you will have a shorter shot coming onto the putting green. This will give you the possibility of reaching the putting green in two shots.

By taking option B, you are playing it safe from the start, with your #3 wood. You know the bunker will not be in play if you use your #3 wood because the bunker is too far for that club.

My choice is option B:

I would use a #3 wood at the start. If I use a driver, there is a possibility I may end up in either bunker. My second shot is a #8 iron leaving me with a 100 yards shot onto the putting green. Hitting over the bunkers with the driver is a possibility but a risk. Hitting over the trees on the second shot is also a risk.

Clubs to use: #3 wood, #8 iron, sand wedge and the putter. (Do not forget to check the wind.)

Hole #2: Par 4 at 385 yards

Would you go for option A or option B?

By taking option A, you are playing it safe from the start, with your #3 wood. You know the bunker on the left will not be in play if you use your #3 wood because the bunker is too far for that club.

By taking option B, you will use your driver and will take a chance over the trees. For your second shot, you will have a shorter shot coming onto the putting green.

My choice is option A:

I would use a #3 wood from the start. If I use a driver, there is a possibility I may end up in the left bunker. Hitting over the trees with the driver is a possibility but a risk.

Clubs to use: #3 wood, #8 iron and the putter. (Do not forget to check the wind.)

Hole #3: Par 3 at 145 yards

Would you go for option A or option B?

By taking option A, you are taking a chance over the water, bunker and near the edge of the putting green. You may have a shorter putt for a possible score of 2 (birdy).

By taking option B, you are playing it safe by using the middle of the putting green as your target. Your second shot will have a longer putt. You may still have a possible score of two (birdy).

My choice is option B:

I would aim for the middle of the putting green. I may still have a possible score of two (birdy).

Aiming for the flag near the edge of the putting green is a risk. If I hit the edge, the ball may end up in the water.

Clubs to use: # 8 iron and the putter. (Do not forget to check the wind.)
