INDOOR DRILLS:

INDOOR GOLF DRILLS

Position yourself at an area where you can focus on the task at hand, as shown in the image above. Remember to execute all exercises (motions) slowly. This way your body will understand what you are trying to accomplish. By using muscle memory, your mind and body will remember it quicker.

All 12 exercises can easily be practiced at home. They are also linked to the images below demonstrating and explaining how to do the drills.

Purchasing yourself an indoor synthetic practice putting surface can help with your putting. While listening to music, make it a routine to practice your putting, as shown in the image above.

1- Muscle memory:

If you want to improve your game quickly, use the muscle memory drill often, as shown and also linked in the image on your right. Learn it, use it and see yourself improve quicker than you ever did before.

2- The 5 elements of the set up:

Learn the 5 elements of the set up until it becomes second nature (learn the 5 elements by heart). Before taking your address position, all 5 elements of the set up should be looked at to insure maximum results, as shown and also linked in the images above.

3- Ball drill and grip pressure:

Holding the club too tight will hurt your game. You should hold the club lightly and practice the ball drill often in order to hold the club with the correct fingers and with less pressure, as shown and also linked in the image above.

4- Posture drill:

The posture is the most neglected part of the pre shot routine. Understand that having a good posture at the address position is crucial. Maintaining this posture during the backswing, the forward swing and the follow through will promote consistency in your game as shown and also linked in the images above. I always place importance on the forward body tilt and try to keep this angle during my entire swing.

5- Weight transfer drill:

To develop a smooth swing, the weight transfer drill must be part of your practice routine. I still practice this drill even though I have been playing golf for over 40 years. It is a great warm up exercise and will give you great results as shown and also linked in the images above.

6- Body tilt:

The body tilt is not considered a drill but is as important as any drills.

In order to maintain your body tilt during the entire swing, you must continue to focus on this body tilt action. Use the muscle memory drill in order to acquire this result so it becomes second nature, as shown and also linked in the image above on your right.

Try visualizing the body tilt during the entire swing, from the backswing to the downswing and to the follow through.

7- Right flexed leg:

The right flexed leg is not considered a drill but is as important as any drills. In order to maintain your right leg flexed during the entire swing, you must continue to focus on this flexed right leg action. Use the muscle memory drill in order to acquire this result so it becomes second nature, as shown and also linked in the image above.

Try visualizing your right leg flexed during the entire swing, from the backswing to the downswing and to the follow through.

8- Backswing at 45 degree

The backswing at 45 degree  is not considered a drill but is as important as any drills.

In order to maintain the 45 degree angle during the backswing, you must continue to focus on this 45 degree action. Use the muscle memory drill in order to acquire this result so it becomes second nature, as shown and also linked in the image above.

Try visualizing your right leg flexed during the entire swing, from the backswing to the downswing and to the follow through.

9- 90 degree drill:

In order to increase the speed of your swing, you must understand how and where this action should take place, as shown and also linked in the image above. This is a drill I still practice often. I combine the weight transfer drill and the 90 degree drill in one great workout.

10- Passive hand drill:

The passive hand drill is a great drill to help out with your short game. We have learned the following:

  • putting;
  • chip shot; and
  • pitch and run shot.

These shots are all better performed when keeping the wrists still. Passive wrists actions are preferred in order to achieve better results, as shown and also linked in the image above.

Passive hand drill: Hold two clubs together as shown in the image above. Make your stroke from 7 o’clock to 5 o’clock without breaking (bending)your wrists. If you are breaking your wrists, the extra club will hit you on your side.
Do not worry about holding the club correctly. The main idea is to be
passive (still) with your wrists (keeping arms, wrists and clubs straight).
This drill has helped many golfers improve their chipping.

11- Coin drill:

The coin drill will indicate if you are applying consistent
pressure onto your grip during the swing. If the coin drops, this indicates
that your grip is loosening during the swing.
Make sure you maintain the same grip pressure during the entire swing.
The coin should remain in place throughout the swing.

Heel pad of the left hand:

In order to maintain the proper grip pressure and make sure that the hands do not separate during the swing, practice the coin drill.

Place a coin (dime) on the heel pad of your left hand, as shown by the red arrow in the image above. Take your normal grip with both hands and swing the club making sure that the coin does not drop.

Heel pad of the right hand:

In order to maintain the proper grip, place a coin on the thumb of your left hand. It should be covered and held in place by the heel pad of the right hand, as shown in the image above.

12- Chipping coin drill:

This chipping coin drill can be practiced from the comfort of your home, as shown and linked in the image above. Challenge yourself to chip a coin. This will train you to make better contacts with your chip shots.

This chipping coin drill forces you to stay down (body tilt) through the chip shot in order to have better accuracy with your clubs.

Place some coins on your living room carpet and try hitting these coins by sending the coins in the air. Place a large bowl in the middle of the floor and try to chip the coins into the bowl. See how many coins you can get into the bowl.

Please note: If you can chip a coin with your pitching wedge, you should be able to chip a ball with your pitching wedge, a lot easier. You may want to use an old wedge when practicing this drill. After a while the coins can start to make small dents in your club face.
