BACKSWING:

The backswing: You can hold the club near the middle of the shaft with the right hand in order to reinforce the feeling of the 90 degree angle. Bring the club back until your left arm reaches approximately the 9 o’clock position. A 90 degree angle should be created between your left arm and the shaft, as shown in the image above.

DOWNSWING:

The downswing: Keep the right hand in this position as you pull down with your left arm maintaining the 90 degree angle, as shown in the image above, until your left hand approaches the right thigh. Gradually slide your right hand closer to the left hand as you repeat this drill until your hands are in the normal grip position. Practice this drill often and you should see an increase in your club head speed and distance with your shots.

90 DEGREE DRILL

The 90 degree drill: Try this drill and feel the improvement of your motion. By allowing the right hand to separate during the downswing you can feel how the 90 degree angle is maintained. Let the hands come together again as the club head approaches the impact zone. Practice often for your body to remember the correct motion. By maintaining the radius of the left arm, it will help prevent the premature release of the right hand, as shown in the image above.

BACKSWING AT 45 DEGREES

When using any irons, the backswing should not exceed 45 degrees, as shown in the image above.

Keep the left arm straight during the backswing. This will prevent your club from going too far in the backswing.

GOING BACK TOO FAR:

You are looking for trouble when sending your club too far back during your backswing, as shown in the image above.

STRAIGHT LEFT ARM DRILL:

With your right hand behind your left arm, pull the arm across the body causing the shoulder to turn, therefore, creating a stretch in the upper left side of the body, as shown in the image above.

This will also help your left arm to remain extended during the backswing.

Keep this position for a few seconds or longer and repeat as often as possible until you no longer bend your elbow while doing your backswing (muscle memory).
