THE QUEEN METHOD

Golf and chess:

Now that you are aware of how distance is important in golf, let see if we can use this information to your advantage.

Every hole should be planned out as to how you will play it using your little black book. It is simply the matter of starting with the correct club. This club will position you in a favorable area for your second shot, and so on.

Comparing the golf game to the game of chess, you want to place yourself in a good position to beat your opponent. In golf, the golf course is your opponent, no one else, not even the players you are playing with. The player who has the lowest score at the end of the game, wins the game.

How will you play your next shot? Which club will you use? Will you be tempted to take your driver, like most players, at the start of a par 4 hole or will you play strategically, using the risk or the safe method?

Your favorite club:

I am not a chess player but I do know that the queen is the most powerful piece in the game of chess. It can move at any direction. If you loose your queen in the game, you are at a disadvantage.

Which club in your golf bag represents the queen? Which club do you feel most comfortable with? Which club can you hit successfully, 9 times out of 10? Identify this club and plan your game by using this club, as often as possible, during your game.

My club of preference is my #8 iron. I can hit a ball 145 yards onto a putting green, 9.5 times out of 10.

It is your job to find out which club is your queen? Everyone has a club they seem to hit better than others. Find it, use it and let me show you how to hit your favorite club, as often as you can during your game, as shown in the image below.

Example:

I will often calculate backwards to figure out which club I will use at the start of the hole. Refer to the example below.

Hole #8 is 350 yards in length.

350 (length of course) – 145 (to the target) = 205 yards (First shot).

I will use the #4 iron in order to reach the distance of 205 yards. My second shot, will be with my favorite club (#8 iron) in order to reach my 145 yard target, as shown in the image above.

VISUALIZATION

Create a detailed scenario of your desires. Picture in your mind having or doing whatever it is that you want. Visualize these scenarios over and over again.

Spend at least 5 minutes every day visualizing what you want. If you can get in the habit of doing this, more is better with visualization. Give yourself 10 to 30 minutes each day, or each couple days, if you can. Choose how much time you want to dedicate to this exercise and try to be consistent with it. Set aside the time to get away from distractions and to be able to rest. Find a quiet spot to relax and perform these techniques. The more you visualize your goals, the faster you will achieve them.

Always visualize that you already have the thing you want. This is a mental trick and an important part of the visualization process. You don’t hope that you will achieve this thing, or that it someday will happen. You have to feel like you already have the things you want. You have to “live it and feel it” in your visualizations. The subconscious mind cannot distinguish between what is real and what is imagined. Your subconscious will act on the images you create, whether they are in your present real life situation or not.

Use all of your senses. What do you see? What do you hear? What does it smell like or feel like?

Visualize in the first person. By this I mean, see yourself achieving your goal through your own eyes, instead of watching yourself from the outside. 3rd person visualizing, or watching yourself from outside of yourself, still works, but is much less effective.  Being in your own body and looking out of your own eyes while you are visualizing is very powerful as this is the way we see and experience life around us day to day.

The more real your visualizing is, the better it will work. Have fun with it and dream big.

SEE IT! FEEL IT! DO IT!

An expression we often hear is: SEE IT, FEEL IT and DO IT!

Picture in your mind:

As shown in the image below, the player is visualizing the end result as having the ball rolling into the hole. His last thought will probably be the end result.

Feel the shot you are about to make. Take a few seconds and remember a similar shot you have done successfully, in the past. How did you feel when you made this excellent shot. It was certainly a great feeling. If you have done this shot before, you can certainly do it again.

The more you think of golf, the better you will become. Golf must be a constant part of your daily thinking. Think of how you are putting, chipping, pitching and playing out of a bunker, as shown in the image below.

Leave the negative thoughts in the closet. Always think positive when playing golf.

Visualization must be part of your pre shot routine.

I have often played the round of golf in my mind, before actually playing the round. Visualize playing every hole in details. If you know the golf course, you should know which club to use when executing every shot

Negative thoughts

If you think you are going to miss your shot, as shown in the images on your left, you probably will.

Your last thought will often be your end result.
